Palazzo Bacile di Castiglione
The 16th century palazzo has been inhabited by the Bacile di Castiglione family for nearly five centuries.Originally it was a castle which at a later date was transformed into a habitation. The old fortifications, of medieval origins, were incorporated into the palazzo. A second floor was built in the second half of the 19th century by Baron Filippo Bacile di Castiglione who needed to accommodate his 14 children (Filippo also constructed the local railway line which still today connects Spongano and Lecce). Until 1999 the palazzo was inhabited by Baron Fabio Bacile di Castiglione, the son of Giovanni, one of Filippo's 14 children. Now Fabio's 6 children live at Spongano mainly during the summer months. On the ground floor there is a small attractive flat -Casotto Barone- with a double bedroom and bathroom (shower and bath), and a living room/kitchen and Studio Fattore with a four-bedded room, kitchen, bathroom and living room (with an extra bed). On the first floor there are 4 ensuite bedrooms -Tabacchi Sotto- which open out onto an immense drawing room with a fireplace which also has a series of terraces overlooking the gardens and courtyard. On the second floor there are 3 elegant ensuite double bedrooms -Tabacchi Sopra- which open out onto a long imposing oak-beamed gallery. There is also a well equipped kitchen and a terrace. |
The Cottages
At the end of the garden there is a small wood where there are 2 charming cottages -Casotto Nuovo and Casotto Caterina. Each cottage has 2 ensuite bedrooms, a sittingroom (with fireplace) and a well-equipped kitchen (dishwasher + washing-machine).
There is also a one-roomed apartment with kithen corner and bathroom (shower and bath)-Casotto Martino. All three cottages have their own private area to eat outside. They are available all year round (central heating). |
